* Special Explorer Days - Inset day childcare cover:
These days coincide with INSET days at a particular school. We generally start and finish the walk at your school. We meet outside the school, at a safe and appropriate place, and do not go onto the school site at all that day. Please enquire if you want us to do similar for you.
Explorer days are 6 hour 'play' hikes in the countryside, for children aged 5-7, 8-12, and 12-16 years old.
During the day, we'll take a leisurely walk through different landscapes, talk, eat wild food, make our camp in a wood, campfires with cooking, have opportunities for play and making things with tools and crafts. Older children and young people can use more advanced tools for shaping freshly cut wood. The cost is £35 per day and the day runs from 10am - 4pm, with provision for an earlier drop off/later pick up (£6 per hour). We are registered with Ofsted and received 'Outstanding' in our 2011 inspection. This year we were recognised as 'Play Champions' by Banes. We accept childcare vouchers.
Group size ranges from 8-12 children with 2 or 3 leaders, younger age groups having greater adult-child ratios. All food for the day is included, and there is lots! Explorer Days start and finish at our house in Upper Swainswick, 2 miles north of Bath. Depending on numbers and ages of children booked on a particular day, we'll be running up to 3 groups based on age groups.
Please contact us if you would like to book a place for your child or a small group. Please take a look at our sites for further information: www.playingoutdoors.org or search for write ups of past explorer days on our blog: http://swainswickexplorers.blogspot.com/
Please feel free to forward this email on to others and if you'd like us to take you off our email list please let us know.
Best wishes

after school, Tuesdays in March 2012
An after school club in Upper Swainswick House and garden, Mon - Thursday.
13th Mar:
Most people came inside for tea straight away, those who didn't went down the garden to start playing. After tea all the girls stayed inside and all the boys went outside. Fleur and Amy played on the bean bags in the front room and Rachel read them a story. Next Amy found a book with puzzles in so she and Fleur played that and then moved onto 'pop-up pirate'. In the garden there were a series of games: Cops and Robbers and Take Down, woodwork, hide and seek, more woodwork. Meanwhile Rebecca and Isobel started a game of Monopoly, but didn't get very far. Shortly after some of the boys came back in and started playing on the bean bags, making children sandwiches. Meanwhile out in the garden, George, our 14 year old, delighted Jack and some other boys by chasing them round the garden. He threatened to throw water bombs at them and soon the boys rose to the challenge, with sharpened sticks to pop the bombs, standing in a line on the lawn, weapons ready. George was upstairs at a window and everyone laughed out loud as a water balloon he had prepared burst on him!! Slowly the children started to go home and Isobel was left on her own, so played one round of Twister before her dad came to pick her up.
6th Mar:
The reception girls came up to the house without the older children and went into the kitchen for tea. There was a special surprise of banana cake. After that they went back outside and made a treasure hunt using chalk on the pavement. The older children then arrived. Edward did a lot of woodwork with the children. Meanwhile Rebecca peeled potatoes for tea. The girls came back into the kitchen for seconds of tea. Isobel amused Fleur and Amy by telling off the boiling water. Unfortunately Amy hurt her tongue but all was made better by a hot chocolate for her and Isobel.
