Explorer day, 3 children aged 7-12, Tues 20th December 2011

An explorer day is a trip to the countryside where you learn a variety of skills, combined with a nice day out.  Scroll down for photos.
The sun was still low on the horizon as we set off on our adventure.  Harvey found 'old man's beard' and we collected some to start our fire at camp. Through the kissing gate across the field we dipped into a steep wood. Out into the valley and we were being watched by some long horned cattle. We opted to navigate around them. Up the other side we cut hazel for walking sticks. Snack of pear and biscuits at the bottom of the never ending steps. Finally at the top we all had sips of water. The mood in the group was happy and relaxed as we pushed on up to the top of the world.  Past an old fallen down house and into a magical wood.  We found 'shaggy mushrooms' and King Alfred's cakes. The tracks were quite slippery from yesterday's rain but we all made it to camp, "I can see the tent" someone said as we approached. We all helped to make a fire or lay out the food. We were soon cooking an aray of treats: smoked biscuits (done on the "cheese tostie stick") sausages, beans, popcorn and of course marshmallows. We put up a new rope swing, with fresh rope. Alex played in the stream showing great imagination, "Lucy helped me make a gateway to a wizarding world".  Alexandro stripped the bark off his stick, Harvey asked for the hammer and enjoyed his cooking. Time to go.   All feeling relaxed.

BEST BITS:  Alexandro - doing this (draw knife on the shave horse). Alex - helping the water and making the gateway with Lucy.  Lucy - making my clay pot. Sue -  helping Alex move the guttering. Barney - how calm and relaxed everyone was.  Camp - Top Camp.
