Explorer day, Fri 16th Dec 2011

A small group of explorers set off to the woods around Swainswick in search of bottom camp.  Scroll down for photos.

We met a muddy farmer who was checking his cows for TB, a disease spread by badgers, he says.  It's sunny and there's a cold breeze.  We sheltered in a wood for fruit, digestive and cheese snacks.  Barney demonstrated dangers of dead wood.  "Balance the long stick on your nose, Barney!" Misha.  Up we climbed, past sheep, through a boggy bit, to top of Solsbury Hill.  "Nearly there!  Hill is flat.  Boys lead the way.  We clamber down a steep slope.  Biscuit and fruit snack in another sheltered place.  Sun is out again.  Barney demonstrated hand signs for common words we use: please, thank you, food types, toilet, good, bad, etc.  On we went.  Oscar and Misha explored a stream.  We passed by a house with geese guarding it.  Blue tits and great tits were having a last feed before flying to Africa.  We climbed up a muddy field, longing to get to camp.  Toby found Captain hook's hook.  Misha bashed away with a metal spike, loosening precious stones.  Up past some pigs, Barney and Toby found a pellet from a  bird of prey.  Nothing much in it - bit squishy.  At last we got to bottom camp!  Barney set to making a campfire. There is a rope swing.  A game developed, 'the person swings and if you can touch their leg without the swinger touching you, you get 10 points,' Oscar.  The kingswood boys enjoyed that.  Misha and Kai helped us with the fire.  We had sausages, cheese and bread.  We finished off with marshmallows.

Best bits:- Rosie - doing the field; Oscar - roly polying down the hill; Toby - having the marshmallows; Oliver - having our picnic; Misha - roasting my metal bar; Kai - lighting the fire; Rachel - the yellow sun; Barney - the walking slow and steady won the race

Leaders:- Rachel and Barney; Camp - bottom camp
