Explorer Day, mixed group of 7-12 yr olds, Wednesday 21st December 2011

A 6 hour adventure in the winter landscape, group of 11 children and 3 leaders.  Scroll down for photos.
We set off into a rain-drenched valley.  Clouds hung in the trees of the opposite hillside.  Through the grumpy man's house we followed a stream.  Estelle found the shell of a duck egg in the reeds.  Up we went to the cut-down ash tree.  A few people climbed to the top.  Zach was first.  We had snack of custard creams before setting off again.  Madi showed great climbing technique.  On along the valley we threw alder seeds into the brook to grow our own trees.  Zach requested that we go to the hollow oak and we had water play and rope swinging while we were there.  Up to the road and over a gate through a really muddy bit.  We all through about the cows there were grazing around the hillside.  We wanted to make our camp away from them and ended up at the top of 'Ditch Camp'.
We soon had a nice cooking fire and a rope swing.  There were shrieks of delight as they went for 'power swings'.  Lunch was served: sausages, cheese, onion, fruit, cheese, bread, biscuits.  The sun shone into our camp, as peopleset about peeling the bark from walking sticks and hollowing out pieces of elder to make blow pipes.  Lots of five finger weaving.  Jasper and Otis were successful at starting their fire with a flint and steel.

Best bits:- Daniel - uum...the sing, uum...at the hollow tree; Jasper - this place, the fire and the swing; Otis - the flints and tinder stuff and food; Charlie - weaving; Finn - probably doing the weaving; Zach - the swing, making my kinda stick; Madi - the weaving, umm...going inside the tree; Estelle - Hhh, uhh, I don't know, seeing the big mishroom inside the tree ;Lucy - Justing chillin'; Sue - watching Jasper and Otis make fire; Barney - winter sunshine

"I had lots of fun seeing the big mushroom inside the oak tree".

Her mum wrote: Estelle was still talking about her adventure the next morning. "I like Barney, he's awesome......when you've made a mistake he just makes it into something funny and makes you feel better".
