explorer day, 6-9 year olds, Thu 5th Jan 2011

A small group of explorers set off into the countryside for an adventure.
We settled into a temporary camp.  It's got clay, some interesting objects like an old kettle, a good supply of hazel, a tree for climbing and sitting up in (Freddie), hiding in (Oli).  We peeled bark off sticks and had a fruit and biscuit snack.  Benje collects 'nice fresh clay'.  There's a cold breeze but the boys are oblivious to it!  On we walked.  We played a 'formula 1 racing' game, cheering on cars on the A46 below us.  We stopped for another rest - sausages, bread, ketchup and chocolate and chatted and peeled, a view of ancient valley below us.  Edward imagines people have been looking at this view for thousands of years.  We walked along a drainage ditch.  Oli enjoyed straddling it.  At last we made camp.  Benje used a knife to sharpen the end of his stick.  Freddie, Thomas and Oli were very industrious preparing Edward's and their campfire.  The wind whirled around us. Ed sets up a wind barrier... "Have a little rest here - cosy" he says. Grey skies but sun has come out which is lovely - pools of sunlight fall on us.  Some decorate sticks with coloured threads.  We have sausages, toast, baked beans... make popcorn, with Thomas.  Oli and Edward make mallets for "whoever wants one".  We toasted marshmallows - the wind is so blustery the smoke goes everywhere.  The wind rages overhead.

Best bits:- Thomas - I've enjoyed... feeding my fire 'cos it kept going out; Benje - peeling his stick;  Oscar - hmm, eating marshmallows; Freddie - making the fire; Ben - I've learnt that everything in the world except humans beings have a sound... and burning those sticks; Guy - umm... it would be probably on the swing; Rosie - stealing the sausages and eating guy's marshmallows; Oli - making the mallets

Leaders:- Edward, Rachel and Rosie
